KCRW x Corita Kent: Sound + Source

  • December 13, 2025 | 11 AM - 6 PM

Novena Carmel, Francesca Harding and KCRW’s Music Director Ale Cohen will bring a lively soundtrack to Corita Kent: The Sorcery of Images with a day of live DJ sets inspired by the artist’s vibrant spirit and radical playfulness.

Throughout the day, genre-spanning track selections will respond in real time to Corita Kent’s bold serigraphs and photographs, translating her colors, words, and energy into a site-specific listening experience that fills the main gallery. Just as the artist transformed the visual language of pop culture into art with purpose, KCRW reimagines her world through sound, weaving music, emotion, and movement into the exhibition’s pulse.

12pm: Ale Cohen (DJ Set)
1pm: Francesca Harding (DJ Set)
3pm: Novena Carmel (DJ Set)
5pm: Listening Session: The Music of Sister Irene O’Connor and Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru

About Sister Irene O’Connor –
Fire of God’s Love is the legendary 1973 album by Australian nun Sister Irene O’Connor—a sincere, soulful, and unconsciously psychedelic song sequence devoted to self-reflection and awakening the spirit within. A collection of original folk spirituals written by and channelled through O’Connor with guitar, electric organ, drum machine and her angelic voice, the album was recorded and mixed in an astonishingly futuristic fashion by fellow nun and recording engineer Sister Marimil Lobregat. This edition from Freedom To Spend is the first authorized reissue of this holy grail since 1976; the album restored and remastered with love from the best available sources by Jessica Thompson.

About Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru –
The Second Recordings is a rare collection of early 1960s solo piano works by Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru—a visionary Ethiopian composer whose music exists in a world entirely her own. Her compositions drift between the meditative spaces of Erik Satie and Debussy, the solemn beauty of Coptic liturgical hymns, and the melodic soul of traditional Ethiopian music. The result is some of the most affecting and timeless piano music ever recorded. Performed by Emahoy herself and originally self-released in small editions in Germany, these pieces were created as fundraisers for orphanages, widows of war victims, and other humanitarian causes. This edition, produced in collaboration with the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Publisher and Foundation, lovingly restores her work and continues her lifelong devotion to using music as a vessel for healing and compassion.
