Marciano Art Foundation (MAF) and The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures present a one-night-only screening of artist Tacita Dean’s poignant work, The Uncles. Filmed and projected in anamorphic 16mm, the film offers an unusual portrait of two loquacious and charming English gentlemen who were the artist’s uncles—Winton Dean and Jonathan Balcon—whose fathers, Basil Dean (1888-1978) and Michael Balcon (1896-1977) were pioneers of early British cinema as well as consecutive Production Heads at London’s iconic Ealing Studios. Beyond copious anecdotal interest to fans of classic British cinema, the film also grants intimate access to two men who admired and struggled to truly know their fathers in pre-WW2 Britain. The evening will commence with an introduction by Academy Film Archive Senior Film Preservationist and FILM exhibition co-curator, Mark Toscano. The film will then be followed by an extended conversation between Tacita Dean and film historian and curator Laurence Kardish who appears in the film.
